Denmark - Where the Heart Beats Faster
August 15, 2022
Sometimes it's the unexpected moments on a journey that touch us the most. When we started our motorhome tour and drove through Schleswig-Holstein, the first thought already began to stir: Could we imagine leaving our beloved Rhineland-Palatinate? The gentle hills, the maritime atmosphere - it already felt different than home there.
But then we crossed the Danish border, and everything became different once again. This country has something about it that's hard to put into words. The Danes have this special way of enjoying life, this easiness that settles like a soft mist over the entire country.
We fell particularly in love with the east coast. Way up north near Skagen, where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet, we found a place that won't let us go. The endless beaches, the special quality of light, the characteristic houses with their reddish-brown roofs - it all left a lasting impression.
Funny thing, really: when you ask other people, they all rave about Sweden. "Sweden is THE place to emigrate to!", they always say. Denmark? Most people just shrug their shoulders. And yet I keep reading in the media about people who are emigrating to exactly this place. Maybe they discovered the same thing we did?
Today we're taking the ferry on to Sweden. Of course we're curious whether it lives up to its reputation. But I catch myself already looking back at Denmark with a touch of melancholy. The thought of emigrating? A few days ago I would have laughed at the idea. Now... well, let's just say it doesn't feel so far-fetched anymore.
Sometimes it only takes a few days in a place to feel like you've arrived. Even though my mind is still protesting: "Emigrate to Denmark? What a crazy idea!" But my heart? It's definitely beating a little faster up here.
The journey continues, Sweden awaits. But a part of me stays here, in this surprisingly enchanting country that has unexpectedly crept into my thoughts.
