Denmark in My Heart: The Beginning of a New Story September 7, 2022
We're back home now, but somehow not quite. A part of us has stayed in Denmark, has settled there like a small anchor resting gently but firmly on the seabed. The drive across the Øresund Bridge back to Denmark was a moment I'll never forget. That indescribable feeling of arriving—how do you explain it? It was as if my heart was saying: "Yes, this is right."
Zealand enchanted us one more time with all its beauty. The gentle hills, the little coves, the dreamy villages—everything seemed even more intense to us, even more meaningful. Perhaps because we were seeing it with different eyes this time. No longer just as tourists, but as people who could imagine calling this place home someday.
The drive back via Rødby to Fehmarn and then through the Netherlands felt like a slow return to our everyday life. But this time, it's different. This time we've brought something with us that weighs more than souvenirs: a vision of our future life.
We've decided to follow this feeling. Not rushing into anything, but not pushing it aside anymore either. We want to approach this idea of emigrating to Denmark carefully and thoughtfully. The first step: we're going to enroll in a Danish language course. Learning the language feels like opening a door to this possible future.
At the same time, we'll search online for like-minded people. There must be others who have already taken this step or are thinking about it. Facebook groups, forums, experience reports—we want to absorb everything that helps make this dream more concrete.
It's a strange feeling: being here, in our familiar home, and at the same time knowing that we've already begun a journey inward. But sometimes you have to have the courage to follow a feeling, even if it leads you down unknown paths.
"Mod til at følge hjertet"—courage to follow your heart. That will be our first Danish sentence that we'll learn. Because that's exactly what we're doing now: following our hearts, step by step, toward the north.
