In My Life

A car ride to Hjørring inspires reflections on the most important people in our lives and the lasting marks they leave behind.

This morning I was driving to Hjørring. Finally, a chance to turn on the radio again. PR5 Nordjylland was playing a program where various artists, mainly Scandinavians, were interpreting Beatles songs in their own way. I knew some of the versions, while others I was hearing for the first time. And then, at the end, "In My Life" came on.

It was as if this song had opened a drawer I hadn't consciously opened in a long time.

I thought about the places of my life.

About France. About Italy. About Germany. And about Denmark, which is my home today. I thought about cities, landscapes, churches, streets, coasts, and harbors.

Places where I was happy.

Places where I laughed.

Places where I cried.

Places I had to say goodbye to.

But suddenly I realized that I wasn't actually remembering the places at all.

I was remembering the people.

Those who left far too soon and whose absence is still felt today.

People who were part of my life for only a short time and yet left something behind that has remained to this day.

Friends with whom I spent countless hours and whose paths eventually diverged from mine. Not in conflict. But because life sometimes flows quietly in different directions.

And the people who live far away today. People I perhaps see only rarely and yet feel deeply connected to. Because closeness isn't measured in kilometers.

As I drove on, eventually the sea appeared beside the road again.

I looked toward the sea. Suddenly it occurred to me that this mighty sea is made up of countless individual drops. Each one, by itself, almost insignificant. And yet this exact sea would not exist without a single one of them.

Perhaps our lives are the same.

No single person makes up our life alone. But every person we meet is a drop in this sea of our lives. Some stay for only a moment. Others accompany us for decades. Some disappear from our sight, but not from our hearts.

And at some point you might realize that you yourself have also become a drop in the sea of other people's lives.

I like this thought.

Perhaps that is the true legacy of a life. Not what we possess. Not what we have achieved. But the marks we leave in the hearts of others and they leave in ours.

I was remembering the people.
