An Unforgettable Week with Family

A wonderful week full of adventures with Uncle Eugen: from Grenen through lighthouse visits to the ferry trip to Gothenburg.

An Unforgettable Week with Family 30 June 2024

How quickly time has passed! We've had such a truly wonderful week, and Uncle Eugen was there for all of it. It was sometimes hard to believe - while we "youngsters" were already getting tired, Eugen kept going strong.

A Day Full of Discoveries

On one particularly eventful day, our journey took us to Grenen, which absolutely fascinated Eugen. After a quick bite at Ditts Smørrebrød, we visited Drachmann's House with its museum, before moving on to the impressive Råbjerg Mile. On the way there, we'd already visited the tilsandede Kirke - the buried church, which carries so much history within it.

That day we walked a total of 18 kilometers. At the Sand Mile alone, we had an elevation gain of about 40 meters, which was quite exhausting. When we got home in the evening, we were completely exhausted, but filled with so many impressions.

Lighthouse Adventures and Dramatic Changes

The next day we headed to the west coast - I really need to remember not to call it the North Sea anymore. We visited the Knude Lighthouse, and I even went up to the top! I was so proud of myself - an absolutely amazing experience.

What was disturbing, though, was seeing that another piece of the cliff had broken off. Even a section where I'd stood with Susanne in spring and taken a selfie was simply gone - nature changes faster than you think.

After that, we visited the place where the Marup Church once stood and walked across the remaining cemetery. In Lønstrup we treated ourselves to an ice cream and strolled along the beach promenade. We continued to Hirtshals to see the lighthouse there and explore the town center. We rounded off the evening with a cozy dinner by the harbor.

Sæby and Relaxed Hours by the Sea

We spent an entire day in Sæby, visiting the church, wandering through the harbor, and checking out the glassblowing studio - it was simply fantastic discovering all these little treasures.

On Thursday we took it easier and had a complete beach day by the sea. With Eugen we took a very long beach walk and collected shells - these simple pleasures are often the most beautiful. We spent the evening at Mimi's for dinner, a wonderful last evening together.

Swedish Adventure with Stena Line

Friday morning we all traveled together with Stena Line to Gothenburg. That was a wonderful experience too, especially in this familiar company. We'd booked the breakfast buffet and really indulged for two hours - we were almost in Sweden by then. We were able to really enjoy the rest of the crossing.

In Gothenburg we made our way through the pedestrian zone and the great shopping centers. Peter, Susanne, and Eugen took a little boat tour, while Michael and I shopped for shoes and had coffee. We got a bit tired - it had been a lot these past weeks, and the situation with Ebbi is still weighing heavily on me.

We also visited the medieval tower - the name escapes me - and enjoyed a magnificent view over Gothenburg and far out to sea. While our dear family stayed in Sweden to continue their road trip, Michael and I took the last ferry in the evening back to Denmark. It was a very beautiful conclusion to our time with the family.

Looking Forward to the Next Meeting

This time it won't be long until we see each other again. In three weeks I'm traveling with Michael to Germany for just under a week. We still have some things to take care of, and then we'll bring my mom back here with us. It's nice to know that the next time together is already just around the corner.

These simple pleasures are often the most beautiful.
