The Calm Before Departure September 24, 2023
Boxes are stacked in the hallway. You can barely walk through anymore. The house, which once felt so spacious, has become a labyrinth of brown cardboard and tape. But it's not chaotic—everything is sorted and waiting to be loaded onto the truck. Sometimes I look at this tower of boxes and marvel at how organized we've managed to stay in all this moving frenzy.
I've bought a new mattress for the old guest bed. We'll be taking that with us, and that's where we'll sleep our first night in the new house. I imagine us lying there exhausted but happy on that mattress, surrounded by boxes, in a strange room that will soon feel as familiar as this one. The first night's sleep in our own home in Denmark—a thought that fills me with a mix of excitement and peace.
It's also arranged that my cousin and her husband will be with us on October 3rd, on Michael's birthday. The first guests in the new house! We've barely got the key, and already the first visitors are coming. But actually, it's perfect—filling the new house right away with laughter, company, and birthday candles makes it feel like home instantly.
It's all so thrilling. I can barely sleep with all the thoughts and plans running through my head. Where will we put what? Which walls will we paint first? What will the view be like from the window in the morning? Questions upon questions that will soon be answered.
Five more days, and then we'll be holding the key in our hands. Time seems to be racing and standing still all at once. Each day is packed with final preparations, but the hours until our departure stretch out endlessly.
The cats definitely sense that something big is about to happen. They watch our comings and goings with a mix of skepticism and curiosity. I hope they adjust quickly to their new territory. For them, this might be the biggest change of all.
In five days, it's happening. Five more days in this house, and then the Danish adventure begins.
