Christmas with a Heavy Heart

A personal account of Christmas in Denmark in a year that brought much grief.

Christmas with a Heavy Heart 24 December 2024

Even though my heart is heavy – today is Christmas.

This year has demanded so much of me. I had to let Mieze go. And I had to let Ebbi go. Two beloved souls who were so deeply woven into my life. It hurts. Every day. And especially today.

And yet: I wanted to create a beautiful Christmas celebration for us. I've been baking, cooking, preparing. We have a wonderful Christmas tree – and it's our first real Christmas here in Denmark.

Yesterday, right in the middle of preparations, Carsten and Gitte stopped by. It was Gitte's birthday, and I was a bit surprised they were visiting us on this particular day. But it was lovely. I could give them some of my dessert to take with them, and it was simply comforting to have them here.

It's reassuring to have friends. People who are there for you. And despite everything, we feel at home – here, in this new home.

Christmas is here. Quiet, tender, a little bittersweet. But also with a glimmer of hope.

It's reassuring to have friends. People who are there for you.
