Sobering Experiences in Vendsyssel

A visit to a campsite in Vendsyssel turns into a disappointment. The unhygienic conditions and poor facilities seriously dampen my enthusiasm for the region and raise doubts about my planned move.

Sobering Experiences in Vendsyssel June 22, 2023

The journey itself went fairly smoothly, though with one bittersweet note: our three cats, who had to stay at home, are already sorely missed. At least we have our faithful companions Maya and Ebbi with us, and they handled the long drive well.

But what awaited us at the campsite was, to put it mildly, a shock. After weeks of traveling through Scandinavia in our motorhome, we've seen many campsites, but this one breaks all negative records. The cabin assigned to us was in a dreadful state: dirty, moldy, and dilapidated—simply unacceptable.

The sanitary facilities are even worse: for the entire site, there's exactly one shower for women and one for men, both in a terrible condition. The communal kitchen is the only thing that's halfway acceptable, but that's really all the positive things I can say.

Fortunately, we came well prepared: our own dishes, picnic equipment, two small pots, and our gas stove give us a certain independence. We don't need to use the kitchenette in the cabin with its questionable sink. The bedding and mattress protector we brought along also prove to be a blessing.

Despite our disgust and several complaints, we had to stay—with two large dogs, we couldn't find an alternative quickly. This experience has thoroughly dampened our enthusiasm for the west coast, especially since the houses we looked at in the area didn't appeal to us either.

Today we took a trip to the east coast and visited Skagen again, among other places. Michael managed to convince me to look at a couple of houses there. One of them made it onto our shortlist, and Michael will arrange an appointment with the realtor for next week.

As for me, my interest in finding a house up here in Vendsyssel and relocating is gradually fading. The sobering experiences of the past few days have left their mark.

This experience has thoroughly dampened our enthusiasm for the west coast.

💡 Campsite Preparation

When traveling by motorhome with pets, you should always bring your own dishes, bedding, and a portable gas stove to maintain independence from local facilities.
