An Intensive Week of Preparation

A week full of research and new insights into life in Denmark. From job opportunities to practical questions like opening bank accounts and MobilePay - the preparation becomes increasingly concrete and reveals countless details that need to be considered.

An Intensive Week of Preparation May 7, 2023

What an educational week I've had behind me! I can hardly believe how much I've learned in just these past few days. My research has taken me in all sorts of directions - from Michael's potential job opportunities in Denmark to the question of where to find beautiful Scandinavian furniture beyond flea markets.

A particularly interesting aspect was exploring the price differences between Germany and Scandinavia. The many blogs I read were extremely enlightening. An important step was also making contact with Union Bank in Flensburg about the possibility of opening an account. This resulted in a very pleasant conversation with a bank employee who himself emigrated from Germany to Denmark but commutes to work in Germany daily - an interesting insight into a possible way of life!

Speaking of banking: Although a Danish bank account isn't strictly necessary, it does seem to make life there considerably easier. The popular MobilePay system, for example, works through a chain linking a Danish phone number, a Danish bank account, and a CPR number (Denmark's personal identification number). With a German bank account, unfortunately this practical solution isn't available. Add to that the annoying fees for international transfers - you even have to transfer a bit more than the actual amount because currency conversions and fees mean less arrives with the recipient.

The to-do list seems endless: I often sit at the computer for hours researching phone connections, electricity contracts, and bank accounts. On my agenda is also an important call to Pendler Info in Sønderjylland. I'm hoping not only to get answers to my existing questions there, but perhaps also to be made aware of aspects I haven't even thought of yet.

It's remarkable how many details there are to keep track of. Sometimes it feels overwhelming, but at the same time it's also fun to work my way into this new world. Each answered question brings us one step closer to our goal, even if it often brings up two new questions in the process. But that's exactly what makes this preparation phase so exciting - there's always something new to discover and learn.

💡 A Danish Bank Account for Emigrants

A Danish bank account makes life in Denmark considerably easier, particularly for using MobilePay. The system works through linking a Danish phone number, a Danish bank account, and a CPR number. With a German bank account, this practical solution unfortunately isn't available. Furthermore, international transfers come with annoying fees that further reduce the amount.
