A Magical Sankt Hans Aften 24 June 2024
Yesterday at 3 PM, it finally happened. After the long, exhausting journey, Peter, Susanne and dear Uncle Eugen stood at our door. The anticipation of the past weeks turned into pure joy as we could finally embrace each other again.
First Steps Together
After a light snack, we set off together to the Sankt Hans Aften here in town. The walk wasn't far, but for Uncle Eugen, after the tiring drive, it was a welcome opportunity to stretch his legs. They had already been in Hamburg yesterday and had some experiences there before setting off on the last leg to us this morning after breakfast. This stretch was still quite considerable, but they made it.
A Festival Full of Warmth and Tradition
The festival exceeded all our expectations. The local butcher had prepared a delicious meal for which I had already obtained food vouchers beforehand. We were truly treated like royalty and enjoyed every bite in the convivial gathering.
As dusk approached, we all gathered around the large midsummer bonfire. Together we sang the traditional song by Holger Drachmann - "Vi elsker vort land" - which rings out everywhere in Denmark on Sankt Hans Aften. In that moment, I felt a deep connection to this country and its people. It was incredibly moving to be part of this centuries-old tradition.
The Magic of the Summer Evening
The evening wrapped us in its gentle warmth. Bird calls accompanied us as the sun slowly sank towards the horizon. There was nothing to be seen far and wide that could have disturbed the peaceful mood. This atmosphere of community and security made the evening something truly special.
An Unexpected Moment of Luck
On impulse, I decided to buy a lottery ticket for each of us. Although there were many tickets, only one could win. My knowledge of Danish numbers is still not perfect - learning them is really a challenge. But when number 73 was called, I understood immediately what had been said.
At first, I couldn't believe it. I asked twice, seeking confirmation from Michael that I had heard correctly. Only then did I dare to look at my ticket. True enough - the 73 was written there! I had won!
The prize package was a true treasure chest: two bottles of wine, a bottle of champagne, chocolate, fine sausages and homemade delicacies. It was so heavy that we had to carry it in turns. The pride and joy at this unexpected moment of luck crowned an already perfect evening.
What a wonderful start to our loved ones' visit - Sankt Hans Aften with all its magic and the feeling of truly being home.
