Over the past months, I've introduced you to a total of 50 highlights here in Denmark. You can find them all in my Denmark Tips section.
And here comes our final stop with the wonderful sun island of Bornholm:
VI. Bornholm
1. Hammershus: Northern Europe's largest castle ruins with views all the way to Sweden. 2. Østerlars Rundkirke: The largest and oldest of the characteristic Bornholm round churches.
And here are the detailed descriptions of these two outstanding sites on Bornholm:
VI. Bornholm
1. Hammershus: The ruins of this fortress, built in the 13th century, represent the largest medieval castle complex in Northern Europe. It stands majestically on a steep cliff high above the Baltic Sea and was a strategic power center for centuries. The modern visitor center blends discreetly into the landscape and offers profound insights into the castle's history. 2. Østerlars Rundkirke: The largest and oldest of the four characteristic round churches on Bornholm once served both as a place of worship and defense.
The massive white walls and unusual architecture are unique testaments to medieval craftsmanship. Inside, valuable lime paintings depict biblical scenes in remarkable detail.
So these were the final two attractions of the 50 destinations you simply must see in Denmark. And they provide a solid foundation for exploring Denmark in its full depth and beyond the usual clichés. The selection is factual and shows the country in all its breadth, from history to modern architecture.
If you really want to understand Denmark, you now have the essential reference points for a proper tour.
