On the Home Stretch

The house in Denmark is bought and paid for. In four weeks, we're moving to Denmark's east coast. The family is already packing the first boxes and preparing for the big leap.

The house in Denmark is bought, it is paid for. It's ours!

Writing these words still feels unreal. What was just a dream a few weeks ago is now officially sealed by the notary and the purchase price has been transferred. Somewhere on Denmark's east coast stands a house waiting for us—our house!

Here in Germany, interested buyers are meanwhile queuing up to view my house. It's a strange feeling watching strangers walk through the rooms where I still live. Their scrutinizing glances, their comments, their plans for "my" home. But actually, we've already found the buyer. The bank was right—it all happened faster than expected.

End of September, so in four weeks, we'll get the keys in Denmark, and then it begins. Four weeks! When I write it down like that, I feel a little panic. Next week is bulk waste collection day, and we'll get rid of everything we can throw out. It's amazing how much you accumulate over the years and how little of it you actually need.

Yesterday I started packing the first boxes—books, winter clothes, things we won't need over the next few weeks. With each carton, it becomes more real.

The cats are watching all this activity with skepticism. Boudelair in particular seems to sense that something big is coming. He barely leaves my side, as if to make sure he won't be forgotten.

Taking giant strides toward Denmark—that sentence perfectly captures our current situation. We're no longer taking little shuffling steps, we're marching with big, determined strides toward our new life. The initial doubts have almost completely given way to anticipation. Yes, it's still a leap into the unknown, but now it feels right.

In four weeks, we'll be reporting on Denmark from this blog. Hard to believe!

It's ours!
